Bio

 

Paul MargolisPaul Margolis first picked up a camera at the age of 8. A documentary photographer, writer and educator, his subjects include people living on the margins of society, vanishing Americana, historic architecture, and the vibrancy of life on New York City's streets. Additionally, he has been documenting the effects of September 11th on New York City.

A unique quality of Margolis’ work is his ability to capture, preserve and convey vanishing worlds. He often combines images with text.

Margolis’ documentary projects include: Shad Fishing on the Hudson, 1985-1986; The Farriers of New Jersey, 1987-1988; Jewish and Poor in New York, 1992-1993; The Jews of Cuba, 1994-1996; The Jews of Ireland, 1996; 9/11 and Beyond, 2001 (ongoing); Hidden Ellis Island, 2002; and The Delaware and Hudson Canal, 2004 (ongoing).

While documentary photography has always been Margolis’ first love, his background includes working as a writer, editor, teacher, administrator and photojournalist. He has an M.A. degree in Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a B.A. in History from Bard College. Paul Margolis lives in New York City.
