Open religious practice was permitted again in Cuba in the early 1990s, and the tiny Jewish communities on the island began to undergo a rebirth. Synagogues re-opened and contacts were re-established with the Jews of the U.S., Latin America and Europe. I visited Cuba three times between 1994 and 1996, met and photographed members of the communities of Havana, Santiago, Cienfuegos and Santa Clara. This project was featured extensively in the Jewish press at the time, and was exhibited at the B’nai B’rith Klutznick Museum in Washington, D.C.
